Academic evidence indicates that there are many factors that affect student learning, however, there is one that stands above the rest: the quality of their teachers and professors.

A group of experts from across the region met in Mexico to discuss how to urgently strengthen the teaching career. It was the Mexican chapter of our Latin American Coalition for Teaching Excellence, a network of recognised experts from more than 14 countries that works for the professionalisation of teaching. During three days in May, we gathered to analyse the challenges of the teaching career for the coming years. It was opened by Agustín Porres, regional director of Fundación Varkey, who celebrated the opportunity to discuss these issues with teachers and relevant attendees. The most important topics of the meeting were:

  • evidence to decide
  • teaching career
  • digital skills
  • teacher training quality
  • teacher valorisation

The Coalition is an initiative of the Inter-American Dialogue, Inicia Educación and the Varkey Foundation, with the support of the Coppel Foundation and Mexicanos Primero.
